CHARACTER

NAME: Diamond
AGE: A couple thousand?? They're younger than Yellow Diamond who is one of the very few with a concrete age of 3897 (to account for the 300-some years on the moon). So Diamond is likely somewhere between 1000 and 3800
CANON & CANON POINT: Houseki no Kuni/Land of the Lustrous, chapter 84
RESERVATION LINK: HERE. (If applicable)
HISTORY: General overview
More in-depth

PERSONALITY:
Diamond is a kind gem most characterized by their warm, gentle smile and a soft voice. They're friendly, eager to help out their fellow gem-siblings, and always wiling to lend an ear to their worries. To that end, Dia seems to spoil those younger than themselves, doting on them, like being easily forgiving of Phos, picking them up and hugging them when Phos is sad, etc. Part of this is because their lives go on so long--they're functionally immortal, after all--that it's silly to hold grudges or stay angry for long.

That being said, however, they had have a long-standing, rather one-sided and very complicated rivalry against their partner, Bortz. By their nature, the gems can't really get stronger in the physical sense--no amount of working out is going to increase their strength. But to Diamond, Bortz, whose toughness is higher than their own and who they've never seen break, seems to be getting stronger and stronger, leaving Diamond behind. Diamond shows a surprising jealous streak here in regards to Bortz and just how deeply insecure and lacking in self-worth they are. Diamond both loves and hates Bortz, wanting to stay by their side but also wanting to get out from underneath their shadow and become someone different. They even go as far as following Phos to the moon, the home of their worst enemy, because, they "want to go where there is no Bortz." They admire Bortz though, and will never turn down an opportuntiy to gush or brag about them or the other gems, despite seeing themselves as inferior. Despite that, Diamond will always risk their life (for what it is) to protect Bortz, sensei, and anyone else.

Because of the fact that they can be repaired so easily, there's a certain lack of fear in the face of death or bad situations. In fact the concept of 'death' and 'pain' are more or less completely lost on the gems, but Diamond seems to go above and beyond in terms of recklessness, throwing themselves into battle and into harm's way without a second thought. They wear long gloves on their arms to hold the pieces of their broken hands/arms together as need be so they can continue fighting, and even will launch themselves in one-on-one battle against huge creatures they might not normally have a chance against, wanting to prove themselves. Bortz often yells at them for their recklessness, but Diamond is also shown to be incredibly stubborn.

Compassionate, Diamond is also one of the few who seems to genuinely want to help and understand Phos; when it's thought that Phos has become a slug-creature, Diamond is the only one to tirelessly work at trying to find a solution to get them back. They're also shown to be very perceptive and analytical (though a bit of a romantic). Dia accurately calls Phos out on their power play-- where Phos was deliberately telling the gems little bits and pieces about the moon and letting them come to their own conclusions about going with Phos back to it. However despite acknowledging this, Dia says that it's fine and they accept it.

They're also quite playful, though almost childishly cruel, such as when they all see Phos's new arms and want to play with them. Bortz, however, wants to cut them and when Dia complains about not being able to touch/poke at them first, Bortz tells them that Dia can hold Phos down while they cut, which Dia enthusiastically agrees to. This is likely because they don't have that same concept of dying or what losing limbs is like, so this isn't something that's considered a big deal. They're also very curious and surprisingly adaptable, able to take things in calm stride that many of their other gems might not handle as well, like facing down the Lunarians or their monsters.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:
- Extremely skilled with swords and somewhat with hand-to-hand combat. If they lose their sword, Diamond is more than capable of using their body as a weapon, such as breaking an arm or leg and using the pointy stub as a weapon

- Extremely agile, superhuman speed, superhuman strength, and able to leap as tall as trees. Diamond is probably around 400 pounds of solid rock and is able to lift other rock-people like Phos (who is probably around like 300lbs) with ease.

- Entirely made of inorganic mineral. Diamond doesn't age or breathe, has no sense of taste or smell, and isn't bothered by cold or heat. They also cannot really feel 'pain,' though they can feel the impact and pressure of weapons hitting them. They also don't have any need to eat or drink. Their "diet" consists of sunlight, and they get sleepy and must sleep once the sun goes down. However, they are capable of staying up for a few days straight, but will be very tired. Also usually hibernates during the winter months when the sun comes out less/for shorter periods, but is capable of staying up through those months (though, again, will be very tired)

- Has a hardness scale of 10 (human bone is a 5). However, their toughness is still second-best. Diamond describes it as: "I may be hard, but I'm fragile under impact. Bortz is special though. Not a monocrystal like me."

- A significant amount of damage is enough to leave them unable to function and might make them lose consciousness, and losing their head will always leave them entirely nonfunctional/effectively "dead." However, as long as all the pieces can be put back together, Diamond will come back good as new. If any large pieces are lost for good, it'll result in loss of memories. Small chips and fragments likely don't result in loss of memories, however, or at least nothing substantial enough to notice. (For example, Phos lost their memories of Jade after losing their legs). So even if completely shattered, so long as all the pieces are brought together again, Diamond can be 'brought back to life'. (For a...given value of life...)

- The material used to fix them needs to be very close to their natural mineral or else it'll be rejected. At best Diamond might be able to awaken for short periods of time before going back to sleep until a matching mineral can be found/used. Much like setting a broken bone, Diamond will have to take it easy for a time depending on the size of the pieces being reattached until the pieces fuse back together. This is usually aided with the help of some kind of paste (like glue? It's not really clear in the series what exactly this paste is but it's probably glue-like. Ish).

- Extremely intense emotion can also cause them to crack/fracture/break.

- Their entire body is made up of diamond. Their skin is just a powder that makes them look more human, but it can be washed off after a time. Generally the powder is set and sticks on with an application of a sort of veneer to keep it from washing off easily. Without this powder they look like their mineral form (their 'hair,' nails, eyes, etc. are their natural state). Unrefined and without powder isn't very pretty.

Nerf: I understand the whole "effectively immortal" thing might be a problem, so I'm okay with them being able to actually die if their head is cut off or some other extreme/condition is met or something.

INVENTORY/COMPANIONS: - The new summer uniform
- Their sword, which is made of obsidian.

FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars

REASON: Diamond is definitely more of a dreamer than a forward-thinker. While observant and studious, Dia is more likely to be daydreaming than scheming, and prefers following feelings rather than logic.

TATTOO: Andromeda, across their back.

SAMPLES

NETWORK: [Dia is very careful with the compass, looking delighted once they can get it to work]

Oh! This technology is all so interesting! [So different from the moon, and vastly superior to what they had on earth.]

This would've been really handy during patrols and things... Oh well! [Another life, out of sight, out of mind... No use dwelling on it too much.

They smile brightly and tilt their head, letting the light shine on their hair
] I don't think I really understand much about what's going on still, but I want to make myself useful and help as much as I can.

Hmm, I'm pretty good at fighting! And I'm a lot stronger than most humans are, I think... So please, let me be of use!

And... I want to learn all about all these cute humans I've been seeing. So if you could tell me a little more about you all, I'd appreciate it! [The way they say "cute" however is more like how one might describe an adorable animal, rather than a living person.]
